Explaining the Shiatsu Technique

by Michelle Howard Smith (all rights reserved)

Shiatsu massage is a technique that is based on the Chinese philosophy that the body functions flow according to energy called the qi (pronounced Chee).  The Shiatsu technique varies from a traditional massage in that pressure is applied to by the fingertips and sometimes the palms versus the entire hand.

The Shiatsu technique is similar to acupuncture in many respects. Various points on the body have pressure applied to them. Theses points on the body flow with energy (the qi).  When the energy is out of balance, stimulating these areas will help return your body to it's normal state.

Massagers that use the shiatsu technique use a rhythmic pattern of pressure to stimulate the qi, but it's not as pleasant as having a professional masseuse or masseur perform the shiatsu massage technique on you.  When a massage therapist performs the shiatsu massage technique, he or she will inquire about your bodily conditions and ask questions such as if you suffer from headaches, back aches or poor circulation.  A specific shiatsu massage plan will then be developed for you to help with any conditions you may have.

Precautions to Take

If you are suffering from stress, depression or other bodily issues, a shiatsu massage may help.  Before scheduling an appointment to have a shiatsu massage technique performed on you, there are a few things to consider:

  • If you have brusises, allow them to heal before getting the massage because the pressure applied to your flesh can be painful or uncomfortable due to the already tender areas.
  • If you are prone to blood clots, do not get a shiatsu or any other type of massage.  The pressure applied from the massage could dislodge a clot and this could be life threatening.

What to Expect

On the day of your massage, wear loose and comfortable clothing since you will be fully clothed during the massage.  It's easier for the massage therapist to reach all of your pressure points to start getting your qi rebalanced.  Also, do not eat before your appointment. A little naussea may be experienced. While the naussea will quickly disappear, having a massage on a full stomache can make it worst.  When you get to the massage parlor or spa, you can expect for the shiatsu technique to be performed on a floor mat or low table.  This allows for the massage therapist to have better control while performing the technique.

You will notice that after having a shiatsu massage performed on you, your stress may be greatly reduced and/or other bodily conditions such as those hadaches, back aches, poor circulation and even digestive problems may be alleviated.  The results of this type of massage come from the restoration of your qi's balance.  Many have had great success with massages performed with the shiatsu technique.
