Welcome to all new and existing subscribers!
It's hard to belive how quickly summer is approaching!  I really can't wait for it because I am not a lover of cold weather.  I like to get out there and enjoy the great outdoors. I also like to do many outdoor activities with my children.

This month's ezine has a focus on health.  I am a firm believer that anyone can improve their health and longevity by doing a few simple things and changing even just one habit.  I did however include a recipe for some delicious home made chocolate cake.  Even healthy eaters need to be able to enjoy a snack every now and then.  It's better that you make your own wholesome snack than buy it all processed from the store.  This way you know what is actually in what you are eating.

Happy Reading!

Heart Attack Warning Signs

by Michelle Howard (all rights reserved)

The signs that one is having a heart attack may be different for men and women.  Understanding the warning signs is critical to preserve life and get fast help. The warning signs that you can be experiencing heart failure or a heart attack begin with discomfort in the chest area causing pressure or pain.  Pain in the back, the jaw, the stomache or in both arms are also signs that you may be having a heart attack. A heart attack may also cause shortness of breath, dizziness, sweating and nausea.  These symptoms usually occur in men.  While chest pain is one signal in women, shortness of breath, back pain or jaw pain, and nausea accompanied by vomiting may also be clear warning signs of a heart attack. Although chest pain is the common denominator for a heart attack, there may be other signs including profuse sweating, fatigue, stomach pain, headaches and even toothaches.

In some individuals, symptoms that are common for someone having a heart attack may disappear as quickly as they appeared.  The pain may not be that of a heart attack but that of excessive stress, acid indigestion or heartburn.

Snoring may also cause heart disease.  If you snore, don't ignore that condition. It may seem harmless but over time, studies have been conducted that have actually shown that snoring may cause heart problems. When people have severe snoring problems, they develop periods where their breathing is paused.  There is also fragmented sleep or sleep deprivation which leads to stress on the heart.  Additionally, when a person snores, there is subconscious arousal which causes the blood pressure to become irregular during sleep. The constant surges of blood pressure mean that the heart is being forced to work harder, applying more pressure to the heart.  Snorers are at an increased risk of having heart attacks.

What's very alarming about heart attacks is that some heart attacks are silent and have no symptoms generally associated with a heart attack.  The person may feel fine one moment and go into cardiac arrest the next.  This is considered the most serious type of heart attack.  My grandmother actually experienced something like this.  She was at work, had a somewhat stressful encounter with a co-worker and she had a mino heart attack. The reason it was a minor attack is because she had no symptoms and there was very little damage done. She just happened to have a doctor's appointment shortly afterwards and while having a routine EKG, she discovered that she had a minor heart attack.

Since heart attacks can be life-threatening, it is imperative for anyone displaying any of the mentioned symptoms to immediately seek emergency medical assistance.  It is possible for a person to experience mild symptoms and then after getting to the hospital, a heart attack occurs as the person is being treated. That's why it's so important to seek medical attention as soon as a symptom of a heart attack arises. It's better to be safe than sorry later on.

If you, someone you know or someone you are in the presence of complains about chest pains or shows any of the typical signs for a heart attack, take them to the hospital and/or call for medical assistance immediately.  Delays can cause irrepairable damage to the heart or worse, death.

Classic Stress Symptoms

by Michelle Howard (all rights reserved)

Stress affects different people in different ways.  Some people stress regularly over their financial responsibilities while others experience stress when there are irregular circumstances taking place around them such as the current Spine Flu epidemic.  The unknown can cause people to experience stress as well.  What causes one person to stress may not necessarily cause another to stress.  Regardless of the stressor, there are classic symptoms that identify when a person is experienceing stress that could lead to health issues. While there is a textbook definition of what Stress is, here are ten classic symptoms of stress:

  1. A lack of concentration
  2. Irritability
  3. Nervousness
  4. Headaches
  5. Missing monthly menstruation periods (women)
  6. Hyperventilating (shortness of breathe)
  7. Lack of eating resulting in weight loss
  8. Overeating resulting in weight gain
  9. Skin rash
  10. Muscle aches in the neck and back areas

In my experience, you can't control all of your stressors but you can decide how they are going to affect you.  For example, let's say you have an outstanding bill that you don't have the money to pay.  Is sitting around making yourself sick with worry going to get it paid?  Of course not.  You can't help the situation because you don't have the money.  I'm not saying you shouldn't do things to try to get the money (provided they are legal of course). I'm just saying that you should do all that is in your power to do and if you can't meet the need then don't make yourself sick worrying over it.  I love that saying, "You can't get blood out of a stone."  I recently experienced some financial challenges.  I could have chosen to worry myself sick over it but I figured what for? I can't change it and since you can't get blood out of a stone, I'll just leave it in God's hands.  Suffice it to say that's a small stressor compared to larger ones such as losing a job and then subsequently losing your home.  Even in that situation, if there's nothing you can do about it, why take away the one really good thing that you may have going for you that nobody can take away from you? Your health.

While not everyone experiences every one of the stress symptoms mentioned, these are classic stress symptoms experienced.  Stress can be managed effectively but if left unchecked, can cause serious health problems such as high blood pressure, nervous conditions and more.
