To Stress or Not to StressOctober 1, 2008 IssueIn This Issue.....
1. Stress on Wall Street and Beyond
by Michelle Howard (c) Michelle Howard - All rights Reserved Stress. Everyone seems to have it. The Stock Market’s even got it. It seems to be spreading like a disease. Lehman Brothers…Bankrupt. AIG…Big Trouble. Merryll Lynch…Big Trouble. Large financial institutions are looking for a bail out and everyone is stressing over what will happen next. Could it be that this nation has brought all of this stress and financial failure on itself? Could it be that a Wall Street Crash is imminent because of a dirty five letter word...G-R-E-E-D. People with tons of money are freaking out and stressing over if there will be a Wall Street crash and what is going to happen with their money. The funny thing is many people with money don’t seem too stressed or concerned about what’s happening to the poor and middle classed as a result of this nation’s financial crisis . Could it be that this nation is so greedy that this financial crisis and potential Wall Street crash is only a symptom of that greed? After all, why is it that someone trading stocks needs a bonus in the millions of dollars, yet a teacher rearing up tomorrow’s adults is barely making $30,000 a year? Why is it that if you park in the wrong location your car is towed ten blocks for a whopping $185 or more? Why is it that the United States government is coming to the rescue of big business with money that they don’t even have (can someone say trillion dollar debt?), yet nobody is planning a bail out for small business owners who have been a pillar in their communities? The stress experienced by Wall Street reaches far beyond Wall Street. Wall Street is not the only place experiencing stress or requiring a bail out as a result of the United States’ economic crisis. Middle class, and people considered lower class because of their economic status are being stressed and need a bail out as well. If this nation has a complete economic collapse where will the average person be if they lose their job (and some already have) and can’t pay their rent or mortgage? How will people survive? If you want to delve even further, how about what’s going on in other places such as Darfur and other parts of the world. Don’t you think that the fact that they have to sleep with one eye open and some people don’t even know where their next meal is coming from, is a reason to stress? Wouldn't it be nice for someone to bail them out of their crisis just like the U.S. has decided to bail out Iraq? Not many people seem to care about what’s going on outside of their back yard but if this nation is ever going to be a world leader again (currently it’s not, no matter what our government seems to say), we are going to have to recognize that people are more important than money. Without people, what good is money? You'd have no one to share it with but yourself (loneliness). Something to think about. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36

by Michelle Howard (c) Michelle Howard - All rights Reserve We've all heard the saying you are what you eat. That couldn't be more true especially with how it relates to stress. In some cases, what we eat can have an adverse affect on an already stressful disposition. When it comes to stress, it's important to take control of the things that's in our power to control. In this case...food. Nobody likes to be messed with when it comes to talking about their food. Most people love cookies, cake, chips, pizza etc (me included). However, if you have a high stress job or encounter many stressful situations beyond your control, eating the right foods can help. Better quality foods can help us focus and concentrate better. Foods that are lower in sugar can help to reduce stress along with stabilizing your insulin levels. Lean meats and complex carbs also help you to stay balanced. Below is a list of 10 foods (while not the only ones) that can help reduce stress:
This list is by no means exhaustive but it's a good list of foods to start incorporating into your diet if you are not already doing so. The best way to prepare your foods is to either bake or grill them. Broiling is ok too but I find that it doesn't leave food in the best consistency for taste.
