Personal Health Care: Building A Strong House

by Michelle H Smith

If you were going to build a house, you'd start with making sure you used all of the proper materials for a sturdy foundation.  Depending on the type of house you were building, you'd need to make sure you had enough brick, wood, or concrete.

The planning and preparation that goes into building a safe and sturdy structure requires close attention to detail.  Now what does that have to do with your personal health care?  it's all in the details.

Just like building a house on a firm foundation requires close attention so does maintaining a healthy body/temple (your house).

You see, your body is not the real you but it is the house you live in.  Would you allow your family to live in a house that is falling apart?  Of course not! Yet, every day people allow their body's to fall apart due to lack of care and concern.

Good Personal Health Care

So, what does good personal health care entail?  There isn't a right or wrong answer. It consists of a number of things (bricks), that are used to build that strong physical house:

    • Caring for your skin (cleansing, moisturizing etc.)
    • Eating right
    • Exercising
    • Taking time to rest
    • Keeping up with regular doctor's and dentists visits (preventative personal care)
    • Minimizing stress
    • Balancing work and play
    • Drinking enough water AND...
    • Watching what you put into and onto your body

This is by no means an exhaustive list but you get the general point.  The last bullet point, "Watching what you put into and onto your body" is a major issue for many people.  Think about it.

How carefully do you examine the types of foods you eat? or the ingredients in your personal care products? or even the chemicals you allow your body to absorb when addressing illness?

When you are responsible for the care of another, you must maintain your body through good personal health care.  If you are not feeling well or have been injured, take the time you need to rest and get better.  If you require help getting better, weigh the pros and cons of any medications before putting them into your body.  More often than not, there is a safer alternative to help address your personal health care needs.
