How to Stay Focused On Any Goal

by Michelle H Smith

how to stay focused

If you were an aspiring lawyer studying for the bar, you would put together a plan to reach your goal.  That plan might include creating a study schedule, creating study note cards, learning effective time management skills and reviewing all of the topics that could possibly be covered on the exam.

Passing the bar is a big goal. It requires focus and a lot of work which can add to an already stressful existence.  However, it isn't without its benefits.  Once passing the bar exam, you would be a full fledged lawyer able to practice law in your state(s) of jurisdiction.  You paid a price but it was worth it to some day add Esq. at the end of your name.

OK, your goal may not be to pass the bar but just like working toward becoming a practicing attorney requires steadfast focus to be a success, so does working toward any other goal in life.

So How Do you Stay Focused on Your Goals?

First off, get a mentor.  Being accountable to someone keeps you focused.  A mentor will remind you of what you are working towards and will help you manage the steps you need to make to reach that goal.

Second, you need a written plan to refer back to on a daily basis.  What is it that you are trying to accomplish? What will it require of you?  Write down that information. It doesn't have to be fancy.  It's just necessary to keep you focused on what you need to do and how you need to do it.

Third, tune out or rather get rid of whatever distracts.  If there's anything that is in your life that can distract you from your goals, get rid of it (except the kids, of course).  The idea is to minimize the things that take up your time and focus your energies on what you are trying to accomplish.  That's why it's better to develop the time managment skills you need before you are about to work toward reaching a big goal.

Lastly, be prepared with problem solving strategies.  Any time you decide to do something in life, problems will arise.  Things may not go as well as planned but you can get over the hurdles with tried and true strategies.

Obviously, staying focused on any goal requires work on your part.  You may sometimes even lose that focus for a short time. If that happens, re-focus your thinking and your priorities.  Check in with your mentor, tune out the distractions, refer to your written plan and tap into those problem solving strategies.  These 4 things will help you stay focused on any goal.
